The 2025 Theme for Doctor’s Day in India

The 2025 theme for Doctors’ Day in India is “Behind the Mask: Caring for Caregivers”.

History of Doctor’s Day in India

National Doctor’s Day in India was celebrated in India in 1991, following guidance by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The day was established as a way to celebrate the contributions of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy, who was both a statesman and a physician. Dr. Roy was instrumental in establishing several medical institutions in India, including the Indian Medical Association. He was also responsible for founding the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi, one of India’s foremost medical institutions.

Origin of Doctors Day

Doctors Day originated in the United States in 1993 when Eudora Brown Almond, the wife of Dr. Charles B. Almond, wanted to honour physicians for their dedication and contributions to society. She decided to observe Doctors’ Day on March 30, the anniversary of Dr. Crawford Long’s first surgical application of general anesthesia in 1842. When President George H.W. Bush signed a resolution declaring March 30th to be National Doctors Day in 1991, recognizing the critical role doctors play in maintaining and advancing public health, the day acquired widespread awareness.

The Significance of Doctor’s Day in India

In India, Doctor’s Day is an opportunity to honor the important contributions that healthcare providers have made to society. The day also serves as a chance to inspire people to seek jobs in healthcare and to increase awareness of the difficulties facing the industry. Apart from this, physicians help patients make educated decisions about their health and offer them emotional support. Since they are in the vanguard of guaranteeing the general well-being of people and the community, their significance in society cannot be overestimated.
